Are you unsure how to size your new sewage treatment plant without wasting valuable resort space or blowing your budget? I see many owners buy systems that are too small for peak holiday seasons or too big for slow months.
To choose the right hotel sewage treatment plant, you must evaluate peak water flow variations, kitchen grease levels, laundry detergents, strict local discharge laws, space footprints, and noise or odor controls to protect the guest experience.
Sizing and Flow Calculation
When I design systems for our clients at ROAGUA, I always start with the numbers. Hotel water use changes fast. Guests wake up at the same time, take showers, and go to the restaurants. This creates huge water spikes in the morning and evening. You cannot just look at your average water use. You must design for the peak hours.
To find your daily flow, you can use standard industry estimates. A safe rule is 150 to 250 liters per guest every day. If you calculate by rooms, plan for 200 to 350 liters per room each day. You must increase these numbers if your property has a luxury spa, a big swimming pool, or busy restaurants. Take your average daily number and multiply it by a peak factor of 1.5 to 2.5. This ensures your system does not overflow during full occupancy.
Managing Seasonal Shifts
Many coastal resorts or mountain lodges experience heavy tourist seasons followed by months of empty rooms. A standard wastewater system will fail under these conditions. Biological bacteria need a steady supply of organic waste to stay alive. If your hotel goes from 100% occupancy to 10% occupancy in one week, the bacteria will starve.
We solve this problem by adding strong flow equalization tanks. These tanks hold raw sewage and feed it into the treatment system at a steady, controlled rate. This keeps the biological process stable all year round.
Kitchen Grease and Laundry Chemicals
Hotel wastewater is much harder to treat than normal domestic sewage. Your kitchens produce massive amounts of fats, oils, and grease, which we call FOG. If FOG gets into your biological tanks, it coats the filters and kills the good bacteria. You must install a heavy-duty grease trap right after the kitchen drains to catch these oils before they reach the main treatment plant.
Your laundry room also causes big problems. It releases high volumes of hot water filled with strong detergents, bleaches, and chemicals called surfactants. These chemicals change the pH of the water and create huge amounts of foam. A good system must have special chemical treatment steps or extra aeration to break down these tough laundry soaps.
Odor and Noise Suppression
Your guests pay for peace, quiet, and fresh air. They will check out immediately if they smell rotten eggs near the garden or hear loud pumps buzzing all night. This is why location and equipment choice matter so much.
You should always look for sub-surface designs or systems housed in insulated rooms. We use special low-speed blowers and acoustic enclosures to silence the machinery. For smells, we install active carbon filters or biofilters. These systems pull smelly air out of the tanks and clean it before it can drift toward your lobby or guest balconies.
